Travel As a Part of Your Wellness Routine

Many of us like to travel. For some, it’s the experience of the actual travel, and for most, it’s the destination. For me, it’s both.

I used to travel for work and loved it. I was out of town on average every four to six weeks during the busy season. I liked the challenge of making sure I was not in a rush to pack. I developed a pattern, and was hardly ever late, and have only missed one flight ever. The other challenge I enjoy is packing as much as I can and staying under the maximum checked luggage weight.

As far as the destination, the part of travel that most of like about traveling, at that time, wasn’t as pleasurable as I was traveling for and to do some work. Please understand, I did enjoy cities like Detroit, Washington DC, Atlanta, Schenectady, and Dallas after hours, LOL.  I miss those days.

I left that job in November of 2019 and had the opportunity to take one trip between then and when the Coronavirus / COVID-19 landed us in this world pandemic.  From March of 2019, until today, I did not travel. Many of us were at one point restricted by the CDC, and in other cases, we just didn’t feel safe. It’s been 16 months since I’ve packed, boarded a plane, and sit and let out that sigh of “it is finished” after I set up my room. Oh, I know I’m not the only one that takes items with them to be as comfortable as possible. Am I?

As I get ready to board this flight to Miami, and take a week or so away, I am being intentional about the “wellness” opportunity of this trip. We have been stressed out, dealing with the loss of loved ones, financial hardships, violence, and America’s reckoning with its embedded racism. I need this, and according to this article:

“The Wellness Travel sector is driven by two types of travelers: On one hand, today’s savvy, wellness-minded traveler actively seeks out destinations, accommodations, and experiences that will allow him or her to maintain a routine of fitness, healthy eating, and other pursuits associated with wellness living.

On the other hand, we have those wanting to use travel as a break from the regular routine of daily life for the proactive betterment of their health and well-being. Vacation/holiday time – away from the normal stress of daily living – allows for greater concentration and focus on the objective of improving personal health and wellbeing.”
