Born and raised in Boston, James grew up in the communities he passionately serves. A former Bromley Health Housing resident and a Madison Park High School graduate in Roxbury, Massachusetts, he furthered his education at the University of Massachusetts College of Public and Community Service, earning several public health and youth development certifications. Most recently, he completed the Non-Profit Management Leadership Certificate Program at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business.
He honed his community-building skills while attending the University of Massachusetts at Boston as has participated in several certificate programs that focused on Positive Youth Development, Civic Engagement, and Non-Profit Leadership.

In March 2020, James launched “Java With Jimmy,” an internet-based talk show created in response to his anticipated disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black and Brown communities. The four-day-a-week vlog cast has since evolved into one of Boston’s most recognized, community-focused, informative, resourceful, and politically engaging platforms, boasting over 20,000 followers across social media. Java With Jimmy covers the importance of health equity, medical information, mental health awareness, community struggles and achievements, political news, and expressions of gratitude. It regularly features prominent political leaders, including Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, and Governor Maura Healey.
Java With Jimmy will celebrate five years of impact in the spring of 2025.
James’s work has garnered significant recognition. In 2023 and 2024, he was named one of Boston Magazine’s Most Influential Bostonians. In a June 2024 interview, Boston Magazine highlighted his journey and the success of “Java with Jimmy,” noting his ability to engage with high-profile guests and address pressing social issues.

His impact extends beyond the screen; James has collaborated with organizations such as Massachusetts General Hospital and the Coalition for a Resilient and Inclusive Waterfront. He also serves as an advisor to Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, working towards a more equitable quality of life for marginalized communities in the city. In 2022, Mayor Wu appointed James to the City of Boston’s Black Men and Boys Commission, and in 2024 was elected the lead of the Health Wellness and Fatherhood Sub-committee.
James is a strong proponent of resident-led information sharing, civic engagement, and mobilization to action toward an equitable quality of life for the most marginalized through social media. He believes communities possess the “digita-bility” to create the change they want to see, particularly in advancing equity for the Black community.
